You are right though, we cannot presume upon God's plan or even his will during these terrible moments. We ask the unanswerable question, Why? And to make things worse, we unintentionally say clichés that do more harm than good. It's best to just be there for them, don't feel like you have to say anything, just be there if they need you to.
